I noted in the article below that I was working on a time-lapse shot of the transit. Well, I finished putting it together this evening and, although it didn't come out as well as I would have liked, it is as good as it will get without further ignoring my schoolwork and other things around here that need doing. You can check it out in the Our Skies album. Also, the photo below made it into the transit photo gallery on spaceweather.com. Well, sort of, anyway. Look for the link with my name at the bottom of the page. Clear skies, Nathan |

For about 5 hours today, little Mercury was visible across the face of the mighty Sun. It doesn't happen often and won't happen again for 10 years. The image below was shot in our backyard with a 60mm Parks refractor telescope, a solar filter and a Meade Lunar-Planetary Imager (a fancy web cam). It may not be as good as some of these these, but not bad for such a simple setup. The large blob to the left is a sunspot. More info on sunspots is available at SpaceWeather. This is the best of all the shots I took and has been cleaned up in Photoshop Elements. Check the Our Skies album in a week or so for more... I'm trying to put together a "time-lapse" movie from all the shots I took. While you're there, be sure to click on the thumbnails to see the full-sized shots - the one below full-sized is even more amazing. Clear skies, Nate |
